Standard 2: Knowledge of Human Development and Learning
One of my artifacts for Standard 2: Knowledge of Development and Learning, is a powerpoint presentation I did for my capstone class for my psychology major. I did a lot of research about Elizabeth Loftus, who was the first person to conduct research on false memories.
Understanding how memories are formed, and how they can be manipulated come in-handy when I teach. It is important that I understand how my students are learning. One of the ways students learn, is by their memories and remembering the information teachers give them as they continue to build off of old information. It’s important to know that even how I phrase a question and/or answer something can change a child’s perception and create a new memory. It’s critical that I make sure there are no misconceptions when my students leave my classroom. My knowledge about how memories form help me remember to consistently hand out exit tickets, have wrap up class discussions or pop quizzes to make sure they are understanding the information correctly.

In order for students to learn, I have to understand their development level in all ways, including how we interact with each other and become a community of learners! Especially during the elementary years, students are learning how to work together during their formative years. I have taken the time to understand TRIBES, which is a researched based process that can be employed within the classroom (ww.tribes.com). The five agreements shown above, are derived from TRIBES. I continually use these agreements during our learning time, which then, helps the students learn in a comfortable environment.
The Common Core Standards (CCS) are set as a framework for me to follow when teaching. The CCS aid me during teaching and tell me what students should know at every grade level. There were some standards, when I was teaching second grade, that I didn't think my students were ready to learn at their development stages that the CCS wanted me to teach. However, when trying to teach the CSS in my classroom, the students actually caught onto the subject matter. I do believe, though, they only did because I always try to teach my students using different strategies. This way, I can help all types of learners learn the material in the way they can comprehend it best. This picture above was part of my Classroom Observation Form that was filled out by my supervisor. Component 1b demonstrates that I understand using different types of strategies helps me reach all students and their developmental needs in order to learn.
